I decided to try my new skills of turning colored pictures into black and white. Been using this only in portraits I’ve taken so why not try with my figures?! Well to tell the truth its harder than it looks, especially on figures because they don’t have the same facial areas of the human face that can create nice shadows, so pictures of figures using direct sun light is best but of course there are exceptions. Turning colored pictures into B&W is not as simple as many people say, like going to photoshop and selecting invert colors, that simply kills the picture itself, the B&W layer that comes with CS4 is quite useful indeed although the final result did not satisfy me at all so I decided to go a more difficult and artistic approach of using at least 5 layers to create my B&W pictures 😛 . One of the best results is when you get a full black background which makes the picture simply gorgeous.
I really like the result here on Mirei, if she was turned to the other side facing the sun the result would have been other, but this is quite an old picture and I decided to use it.
Choosing one of Kotona pictures to transform was really hard because none of the ones I took looked good enough on B&W and so this was the one that worked best.
Kan’U got simply gorgeous in B&W, if the background was completely black the result would have been much better.
Perhaps I went a bit over the top with Chou’un, I made the background a bit to dark.
Chua Churam got pretty good in B&W, it was quite hard to choose the picture as well.
As I mentioned before there are exceptions to everything because most pictures of figures in studios have simple lights and the shadows are very small but Super Rats really knows how to create shadows in his home made studio so I decided to give it a try turning one of his latest works into B&W and the result was pretty good in my point of view mostly because the background is full black. You can see more of Sakura at his page.
Why “browny” B&W pictures?! Well to tell you the truth it’s simply a personal taste, it could have been black, blue, green, red, whatever you may choose, it depends on your taste, the same thing goes for shadows and light.
